About Port Alberni

About Port Alberni

Named for Captain Don Pedro de Alberni, Port Alberni is nestled in the Alberni Valley at the head of Alberni Inlet, the longest inlet on Vancouver Island and one of the deepest water ports in British Columbia. A fjord-like channel that deep sea vessels and cruise ships can easily navigate, the Alberni Inlet remains an important asset for the local economy.

Recently named “The Ultimate Fishing Town” by the World Fishing Network and Canada-wide public votes (http://www.wfn.tv/ultimate-fishing-town), Port Alberni is the Salmon Capital of the World – adjacent waters boast all five species of Pacific salmon! Port Alberni’s harbour district is thick with tackle shops, boat rentals, fishing charters and knowledgeable guides. This is definitely one of the major hubs for angling and world-class sport fishing and is the best resource centre for information on fishing locally in both saltwater and freshwater.

For decades the main industries of Port Alberni have been logging and fishing, but today the town is considered a major tourist hub, situated as it is on the fringe of the Island’s wilderness in surroundings that include mountains, pristine lakes, surging rivers filled with salmon and trout, and rainforests of giant trees towering more than 200 feet into the sky.

With the increased popularity of Pacific Rim National Park, Barkley Sound, Clayoquot Sound, Ucluelet and Tofino, many visitors are choosing Port Alberni as the epicentre and base of operations for their West Coast Adventure. The cachet of the Alberni Valley is that it offers all of the abundant natural beauty of the rugged coast as well as convenient, plentiful amenities and affordable accommodations.

The Alberni Valley and the mid-west coast of Vancouver Island are the traditional ancestral lands of the Nuu-chah-nulth (translation: “all along the mountains and sea”); as such, Port Alberni is a city founded in the rich traditions of local First Nations heritage. The Alberni Valley Museum features collections that tell the stories of community history and Nuu-chah-nulth art and culture, and is considered one of the finest community museums in British Columbia. Another popular locale is the revitalized Harbour Quay, at once a working deep-water port for regularly scheduled cargo and passenger ships and a bustling oceanfront shopping, dining and gallery district featuring a weekend farmer’s market. Tours of active logging and mill operations are also available, and one of the most popular offerings is a visit to the restored 1912 CPR Station to board the Baldwin steam locomotive to McLean Sawmill, a National Historic Site and the only commercial steam-operated sawmill in Canada.

In short, Port Alberni simply has it all, an abundant cultural heritage and unique history, a deep sea port and beautiful waterfront quays, shopping malls and state-of-the-art gaming entertainment, and a renowned and well-developed network of sports and recreational facilities. So, what are you waiting for? You should be here! Book with Alberni Inn and make us your home base to explore this thriving, vibrant community surrounded and enveloped by some of the world’s most beautiful natural capital!
